Fundraising Tips

While fundraising does require some degree of time, energy and creativity, it does't have to be difficult. It should be a fun process that leaves you with a real feeling of accomplishment! SOme participants share their experiences.

Creating original team T-shirt!(No.122 resonance)

"We thought it would be difficult for one individual team to raise 120,000 JPY to donate without a plan of action, so we decided to create an original team T-shirt which we would give people who made donations over a certain level. We made 100 T-shirts that we designed ourselves. We can somehow make it happen with 4 people working together! Our plan is to donate all the money we gathered after deducting the cost to make the T-shirts. We are hoping that we will be connected with the sponsors who "resonated" with our challenge by having them keep wearing the T-shirt even after the event "

White T-shirt Fundraiser(No.102 ML Ippo Ippo)

"A birthday party for one of our team members provided a fun opportunity to raise some money for our Oxfam trailwalker challenge. With the party swinging and the drinks flowing we sprung our fundraiser on the happy crowd. To participate all they had to do was make a donation to our Oxfam
trailwalker fund and in return they were given a white t-shirt and a marker pen, and free rein to indulge their artistic and literary skills on eachother.

T-shirts could be secured for a minimum of \100 but our generous party goers contributed an average of \1000 each and had a huge amount of fun writing and drawing on each other. And at the end of a fun packed evening we raised money for our trailwalker challenge and everyone left with a memory of a fun birthday party and more importantly knowledge of our Trailwalker chellenge and the great work Oxfam does helping needy people in developing
countries."

Make original donation boxes and keep them in your workplace(DESCENTE teams in 2007)

Descente%201F.jpg

Donation boxes are placed in front of the smoking room at each floor and in the reception area.
The teams are asking support from not only their colleagues but also guests visiting the company.
For the details, please visit here.

"DESCENTE place donation boxes and posters in the reception area and next to the water dispenser to encourage staff to support the teams. The walkers themselves pop around the offices with donations boxes to ask for support. As a result, the staff have contributed generous donations! "
Please make your original donation boxes with posters and leaflets. If you need, please contact us!

And more....

・Have a garage sale.
- People might want to ask for a discount. So, inform them by giving out Oxfam brochures and also attract people by lowering the prices of your garage sale items. You can also inform about Oxfam Trailwalker.

・Write a simple article about your big challenge to send to the newsletters in your workplace or community.
- They may be able to help with publicity in your fundraising.

・Invite your friends to a parties. Name each “Trailwaker pre-event party.”
- Tell invitees that you want sponsorship in cash as a present.
- Hold a house party and sell tickets at it.
- It could be a usual Nabe-party or a BBQ. Charge its material cost plus a little bit more for donation.
- Hold a walking party which could be one of Trailwalker training sessions beforehand.
- Charge an entrance fee.
- They may be able to help with publicity in your fundraising.

・Put posters up in community centers and the gym to get attention.
- Train with your friends and show them that your commitment is very serious, this way you might gain their support.

・Provide a small gift (could be your handmade cookies or buying a drink) to those who donate more than you expect.

・Ask your friends who want to quit smoking for sponsorship instead of buying a pack of cigarettes. Write “collecting your cigarette money” in a donation box.

・When you split the bill at the bar, ask “500 yen for supporting our team.” Even 500 yen will make a difference if you continue it half a year.

It might take a little courage to ask for sponsorship for the first time, but once you get started, it will not be so hard since you learn and get more ideas from your experience. Keep going and you will reach the goal soon!
