Name: Ms. Cheung Ka Yi, Sally
Living Place: Hong Kong
■Why did you participate in the event?
- To support Oxfam helping poor people around the world.
- For ourselves challenge and experience.
- To get improve hiking skill.
- For the beautiful mountain view.
■What motivated you to participate in this event? I was working at a Japanese wholesale company in Hong Kong since 1994. My colleagues and clients formed a team for Trailwalker and I wanted to support their team.
■What is the most wonderful experience in the event?
It was in the night, walking in the dark, everyone was hold a torch, when you look back into the mountain, you can see the most beautiful light dragon. At the moment, I knew there are lots of people walking with me, doing the same meaningful thing we in deep believe it is right of what we do.
No matter how tired we are, we are not alone, this mission is possible.
Our friends gather together, come to a few check point, wait for us. They bring us hot food, and exchange clean cloths. Give us encouragement, support us in action.
■What is the hardest point in your experience?
To learn how to be a team: finding team-mates, lucky lottery (in Hong Kong we did to being choose to join the game), ask fund support from friends.
To set up a training schedule for 4 team-mates to go training together.
To set up the finish target (complete the trail within how many hours)
In the event the trail is long, we felt so tired, no sleep, we need to encourage each other and other team.
Witness other team-mate to quit, after we had been train so hard.
■How did you do fundraising? What was the most effective way? Before we plan to join the trailwalker, we tell our friends about it. We will report to our friends the result of our training, to gain their concern/attention on this event. Sent them the information about this event, about Oxfam, and funding to poor people…etc,.
■How did you do training? What was the most important point?
-The event in Hong Kong in 1st weekend of November.
- We start training in April, normally we go hiking in day time at the beginning. Start from 20km distance.
- Then we start training in night time, walk on the trail we will walk in the night (during the competition), we also extend the distance to 30km.
- In my experience, full team training is most important. Go hiking once a week, some team-mate work in shift duty, so hard to match a good schedule for 4 go training together.
■Is there anything you recommend to carry during the event? It is a lot to carry, to eliminate the heavy bag weight, suggest 4 person share their material. For example, 1 person take massage cream, 1 person take radio, 1 person has the compass etc.
■Did you ask the support team to help you? What do you think about the support team? Yes, I did ask support team for help. Before the event, I need to take them go to the check point for visit and assign a meeting area. Give them my clean clothes and ask them prepare my special request food etc.
■Any comment to the participants in the first Oxfam Trailwalker Japan?
